Revisiting Black Queer London Clubland 1979–2021 unfolds across two public events at The Great Pulteney Street Gallery, bringing together archive, film, memory, and lived experience.

The programme traces how Black queer club life shaped culture, politics, and community in London from the late 1970s to today.

Discover the History

Private View and Illustrated Talk

6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
The Great Pulteney Street Gallery, Soho

The evening opens with the official Private View of the exhibition, followed by an illustrated talk exploring Black queer club spaces as sites of survival, resistance, and joy.

Using Vernal Scott’s recent publication UK Black: Windrush Waves, Ungodly Sins and Early Graves as a starting point, the talk brings together:

  • Personal testimony
  • Archival imagery
  • Collective memory

The conversation looks at how nightlife became a place for connection, safety, and political presence.

As part of the exhibition programme, Screening Sunday presents a special screening of Beyond: There’s Always a Black Issue, Dear, directed by Claire Lawrie.

The film examines Black British experiences within feminism, identity politics, and cultural activism.

It expands the exhibition’s themes by:

  • Offering historical context
  • Centring voices often pushed aside
  • Linking activism with cultural life

The screening is presented with permission as part of Re I Visiting Black Queer London Clubland 1979–2021.

Partners include LGBT+ Forum Westminster, Black Music Research Unit, City of Westminster, and Queer Heritage and Collections Network.
