Director Martha J. Baldwin and Schools OUT Chair Lynne Michelle Nicholls discuss Section 28, queer shame in education and the internal experience of becoming yourself after Lulla at Omnibus Theatre

Lulla Q&A at Omnibus Theatre: Martha J. Baldwin, Lynne Michelle Nicholls and Ben SantaMaria in conversation about shame, Section 28 and what it means to tell queer stories for young people

Following a performance of Lulla at Omnibus Theatre on 7 July, director Martha J. Baldwin joins Lynne Michelle Nicholls, Chair of Schools OUT and LGBT+ History Month, in a conversation curated by writer and producer Ben SantaMaria.

Lulla follows Marin, a 16-year-old queer girl who escapes her parents' control into a surreal folk horror dream world guided by the gender-shifting Lady Nightshade. The play uses physical theatre and dark fairy tale imagery to explore the shame placed on young LGBTQ+ people.

The conversation covers the history of Schools OUT, the legacy of Section 28, what is changing now for queer young people in education, and what theatre can do that legislation and statistics cannot. Martha, Lynne and Ben are then joined by audience questions.
