The Berlinale is bringing four films back to Berlin this summer including a Teddy Award winner's latest and a queer cult classic
Summer Berlinale runs 21 to 24 June at Freiluftkino Friedrichshain, an open-air cinema in Berlin. Faraz Shariat's Prosecution and the 1999 classic Lola und Bilidikid are both on the programme.
The Summer Berlinale returns this June, bringing selected highlights from the 76th Berlinale to Freiluftkino Friedrichshain for four open-air screenings before their theatrical release. For queer audiences in Berlin, two of the four nights are unmissable.
Wednesday 24 June brings Prosecution, Faraz Shariat's legal thriller about Seyo Kim, a German-Korean state prosecutor who becomes the target of a racist attack and must seek justice through the same machinery she knows to be unreliable. The film won the Panorama Audience Award for best feature film at this year's Berlinale, voted on by over 26,500 Berlin cinemagoers. Shariat's debut Futur Drei won two Teddy Awards at Berlinale 2020, including Best Queer Film. Prosecution is his second feature and it confirms everything his debut promised.
Tuesday 23 June is the night for anyone who has not seen Lola und Bilidikid. Kutluğ Ataman's 1999 film, screening as part of the Berlinale Retrospective, follows a young man in Berlin who discovers his older brother is a performer in a queer cabaret and falls for a transgender woman. It is one of the most significant queer films made in Germany, rarely screened publicly, and this outdoor night screening with film guests is exactly the way to see it for the first time.
The programme opens Sunday 21 June with No Good Men by Shahrbanoo Sadat, a Berlinale Special Gala, followed by Sunny Dancer, a UK film from the Generation 14plus section, on Monday 22 June.
