Lola Tung Is Starring in a Lesbian Football Film Set in Spain and the Internet Has Already Renamed It

The Summer I Turned Pretty star has been cast in Ripe!, a sapphic football romance produced by World Cup champion Kelley O'Hara, set on the Catalan coast.

The official Instagram account for Ripe! posted a teaser on 30 April showing Lola Tung in a football kit, wiping sweat from her face, locking eyes with co-star Rita Roca. The comments section immediately renamed the film The Summer I Turned Gay. That is the level of excitement this announcement has generated, and honestly it is completely justified.

Ripe! is based on a short film of the same name, directed by Tusk and produced by O'Hara, which won Best Narrative Short at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024. Set on the Catalan coast, it follows Sophie, an American exchange student, who falls for Gloria, a local rival on the pitch. The directors told Forbes in 2024 that the intention was to make the lesbian version of Call Me By Your Name. The feature film expands that story, with Tung stepping into the lead role alongside Roca, who appeared in the original short.

O'Hara's involvement carries its own story. In 2019, she went viral when she ran into the stands to kiss her then-girlfriend after the US women's team won the World Cup. Conservative commentators had spent the tournament trying to turn O'Hara into a patriotic symbol — they celebrated her flag-raising moment after the final whistle. What they got instead was one of the most visible public coming-out moments in women's sport. She is now engaged to the same woman, and is executive producing a lesbian football film set in Spain. The arc is complete.
